What I Do

Freelance & Memoir Writing

For me, writing has always been about telling a great story whether creating my memoir about 1970s Austin or  digging into musty archives to capture the 100-year history of Austin’s Paramount Theatre. Engage the readers, preserve history and make it come alive. For more than thirty years, I have researched and written articles, books/manuals, marketing collateral, fundraising letters and speeches for clients, including:

Arrowhead Films

Austin Public Library Foundation

Austin Woman Magazine

DMA Company

Kirkus Reviews

Chisolm Trail Heritage Museum

The Christi Center

MomBo Interiors

Paramount Theatre

Texas Highways Magazine

Texas Lifestyle Magazine

Tutor Services

My goal with every student is to bring the joy of writing into his life. I don’t start with “Okay, let’s write this or that,” but rather, “Want to play Two Truths and One Lie?” where we get to know each other before we tackle metaphors and similes. It is all about building trust and a comfortable environment with my tutor students, third through seventh grades. My students and their parents have seen marked improvements and I welcome you to contact them and me for more information.

Writing Workshops

Teaching for a literary nonprofit, I learned that trusting, collaborative and inspiring spaces were the key to great writing. Working with adults, who claim from the start, “I am not a writer!” find themselves soon celebrating their written words with an amazed, “I didn’t know I had that in me!” joy. Their life stories are filled with poetic musings about motherhood, as well as tales of depression, divorce or death. I have been honored to share grief journeys with individuals who lost a child and others who are experiencing another kind of loss—early memory loss. These adults want to be heard and I love the opportunity to work with them to pull forth their powerful stories. I launched “Write About Town” in my new town of Kingsland to bring writers together.
